Developer Sucker Punch has produced this incredible PlayStation 3 exclusive title and lives up to its company name: inFamous has come out of nowhere to completely take our breath away. In some ways inFamous is the “greatest hits” of next-gen gaming, combining some of the best elements of Crackdown, GTA, and Bioshock. inFamous’s imitation of these great titles brings together an almost perfect concoction of advanced gameplay mechanisms and wraps it up in a truly compelling tale.

After Empire City gets blown up, our protagonist Cole wakes from his coma to find the city in ruins and himself imbued with special powers. He can control electricity using his body as a conduit, sucking in power and then blasting it out in a variety of controlled ways to take down enemies. He can use lightning blasts, set off bursts of area-covering explosion, and fire off grenades and rockets of energy. He can heal fallen innocents with a small reviving burst, he has massive strength and his body can take a great amount of punishment. This is rather fortunate because the city is riddled with bad guys and a pandemic, and the government has left everyone to rot. It’s up to you to decide whether Cole will deal with this as a good guy or a hate-filled baddie, but either way you’ll be off on a variety of missions that cover three massive islands.

The missions are varied and allow you to cover the terrain from ground to rooftops and every wall, railway, pole and ledge in between. Far from playing a mere climbing game, though, you’ll be able to flow through the landscape with incredible ease, never challenged by the heights or terrain.

The combination of clever missions, fun powers, brilliant environment and challenge without frustration makes this game one of the best on the PS3 to date.

9/10
